Russian border guards seize over 100 kilos of heroin in Tajikistan

DUSHANBE. July 5 (Interfax-AVN) - Russian border guards seized over 100 kilograms of heroin on the Tajik-Afghan border on Friday, the press service of the Federal Border Guard Service reported.

They spotted two groups of armed infiltrators crossing the Panj River from Afghanistan in the area patrolled by the Moscow border guard detachment at 4:00 a.m. local time.

A border guard patrol tried to intercept the infiltrators who opened small arms fire. One group jettisoned its cargo and made away back into Afghanistan, but the other was destroyed. There were no casualties among the Russian border guards.

The border guards found at the site five bags with heroin weighing a total of 100kg and one grenade launcher round.

On Thursday at 11:30 p.m. local time a combat clash with a group of armed drug couriers happened in the detachment's area of responsibility. The couriers abandoned over 40kg of heroin and returned to Afghanistan.
