Russian nuclear-powered sub launches unique spacecraft

MOSCOW. July 12 (Interfax-AVN) - The Russian Northern Fleet's nuclear-powered submarine Ryazan, commanded by Colonel Tagir Kayaev, launched from an underwater position a Demonstrator- 2 spacecraft with an inflatable braking system, Colonel Igor Dygalo, head of the Russian Navy's press service, said on Friday.

The spacecraft is intended to deliver cargo from space orbit and is capable of landing on other planets, Dygalo told Interfax- Military News Agency.

The underwater start and launch of the spacecraft took place with the help of the Volna booster rocket made by the Academician Makeyev design bureau on the basis of the RSM-50 ballistic missile.

In accordance with telemetric flight information the experiment with putting the Demonstrator 2 spacecraft on orbit and its entering the atmosphere was a success. The information for the spacecraft will be used for the development of new generations of spacecraft.

Russian Navy Commander Vladimir Kuroyedov thanked commander and crew of the Ryazan submarine for high professionalism and naval skills.
