Rebels from Georgian Pankisi gorge plan to relocate to Chechnya in near future

KHANKALA. July 12 (Interfax-AVN) - Rebel groups subordinate to warlord Ruslan Gelayev and located in the Georgian Pankisi gorge will attempt to break through to Chechnya in the near future, a source in the unified federal headquarters told Interfax-Military News Agency on Friday.

"There is reconnaissance information that the Gelayev rebels plan to break through to Chechnya in the near future," the source said.

According to him, the guerilla units are numbering 2,000 people. "They are well-armed, in particular, the extremists have the Stringer portable SAM systems," the source stressed.

"At present the Chechen strap of the Russian-Georgian border is covered with mist and the rain is falling at the site," the source added.
