MOSCOW. July 16 (Interfax-AVN) - Officials of the Russian Land Forces and U.S. Army in Europe are discussing the progress in the peacekeeping operation at the Balkans, interaction problems and cooperation prospects in Moscow, a spokesman for the military attache of the U.S. embassy in Russia told Interfax-Military News Agency.
"On Monday, July 15, 2002, a delegation of U.S. military personnel from the U.S. army in Europe arrived in Moscow for a week- long visit to Russia. The group is headed by General Montgomery C. Meigs, Commander of the U.S. Army in Europe and the 7th Army in Heidelberg, Germany. Commander of the Russian Land Forces and Deputy Minister of Defense Nikolai Kormiltsev is the sponsor of the visit," the spokesman said.
During the visit the U.S. delegation will meet with Kormiltsev and travel to the cities of Chita, Volgograd and St. Petersburg.
According to the spokesman, the purpose of the trip is to strengthen U.S.-Russian military-to-military relations and specifically to enhance better contacts between the U.S. Army in Europe and Russian Land Forces.
"The visit follows in the aftermath of the successful visit by the U.S. Army Chief of Staff from Washington, DC, and the visit of the Commander of the U.S. Army's Southern European Task Force in Vincenza, Italy," the spokesman said.
