Two rebels escape from Grozny detention facility

GROZNY. July 23 (Interfax-AVN) - Two people suspected of banditry, terrorism and assault escaped from a temporary detention facility of the Zavodskoy district interior department in Grozny on July 20, a source in the Chechen interior department told Interfax on Tuesday.

The source said the escapees had been brought to Grozny from a prison in Chernokozovo.

The prosecutor's office has opened a criminal case. Three police officers who were on duty at the time of the escape have been detained and put in custody. The interior department said their involvement in the incident is being checked.

The Chechen administration confirmed the incident and did not rule out the possibility of a conspiracy between the police officers and the suspects.
