GROZNY. July 24 (Interfax-AVN) - Rebels opened fire at a strongpoint of a composite police unit from the Karachayevo- Cherkessian autonomous republic in the Zavodskoy district of Grozny overnight to Wednesday, a spokesman for the Interior Ministry department for Chechnya told Interfax-Military News Agency.
"Reprisal fire killed two extremists, there were no casualties among the policemen," the spokesman said.
Extremists have stepped up operations against law-enforcers in Grozny this week, he stressed.
On Tuesday evening a radio-controlled landmine blasted in the Leninsky district of the city damaging an Ural truck of a composite police unit from the Altai autonomous republic. As a result Captain Konstantin Repko and Senior Lieutenant Sergei Borodin got fragmentation injuries. Both policemen were taken to a military hospital, their lives are out of danger.
The spokesman said the extremists were planning to stage a series of demonstrative terrorist acts in early August. "According to the available information, some 30 rebels have penetrated into the city and are trying to conduct reconnaissance and collect data on actions of federal forces," he stressed.
Police units hold intensive checks in Grozny, and all strongpoints are put on high alert.
Two rebels were detained in the city on Tuesday.
