Deserter commits suicide in Trans-Baikal region

MOSCOW. July 24 (Interfax-AVN)- Private Dmitri Ivanov of the Kyzyl border guard unit in Russia's internal republic of Tuva, who went AWOL and killed two local residents overnight to Wednesday, shot himself after being found.

"This happened after he was blocked by a group of border guards and officers of the Tuva Interior Ministry, and was offered a chance to surrender," the press service of the Russian Federal Border Guard Service told Interfax-Military News Agency.

In the early hours on Wednesday, Private Ivanov left his patrolling route, after which he killed a man and a woman at the shepherds' camp and stole their car.

"Contrary to media reports citing local law-enforcement agencies, he did not take any hostages," the press service said.

A criminal case was opened in connection with the crimes committed by Ivanov.
