CIS military cooperation hq considering establishment of new command body

MOSCOW. July 29 (Interfax-AVN) - The CIS military cooperation coordination headquarters is considering establishment of a new control body tentatively titled the Coordination Staff, spokesman for the headquarters Major General Yevgeny Nikiforov said on Monday.

Generals and officers of operations groups maintained by the general staffs of the CIS nations will form the core of the new body, Nikiforov told Interfax-Military News Agency.

It is necessary to establish the Coordination Staff because there is a need to coordinate actions of troops from various countries and other law-enforcement bodies of the CIS in an emergency period and during joint exercises, the spokesman said.

"The Coordination Staff will not control actions of troops. Troops of the nations taking part in joint military operations are subordinate to their nations. The new body will focus on analyzing the military-political situation in a certain region of the CIS, adjusting aspects of planning of joint military operations, organizing interaction between the CIS Anti-terrorist Center, corresponding ministries and departments, providing information support, etc.," Nikiforov stressed.

The final decision on the expediency of the Coordination Staff's establishment will be made at a joint session of the CIS foreign and defense ministers, heads of security and secret services, the spokesman added.
