Federal forces lose 12 KIA, 28 WIA in Chechnya in a week

KHANKALA. July 29 (Interfax-AVN) - Federal troops in Chechnya lost 12 servicemen KIA and 28 servicemen WIA last week, a source in the unified federal headquarters told Interfax-Military News Agency on Monday.

"The Defense Ministry's losses in Chechnya amounted to five killed and 11 injured servicemen last week," the source said.

A total of 4,261 servicemen have been killed and 12,414 injured since the beginning of the anti-guerrilla operation in the North Caucasus, including battles in the Dagestani autonomous republic. The Defense Ministry has lost 2,470 and 6,145 people respectively, the source said.

He noted that rebels had scaled up sabotage and terrorist activities.

According to the source, 18 out of 27 landmines planted by guerrillas in the breakaway republic were defused last week.
