Moscow military district servicemen put out three large fires

MOSCOW. July 31 (Interfax-AVN) - Servicemen of the Moscow military district have terminated three fire epicenters in the Nizhny Novgorod and Yaroslavl regions since July 24, chief of the district's press service Colonel Vitaly Gusak told Interfax- Military News Agency.

"The largest fire covering an area of up to 600 hectares was extinguished near the Frolishchi village in the Gorokhovets district of the Nizhny Novgorod region on Tuesday," Gusak said. He stressed that the area of two other fires amounted to 110 and 12 hectares respectively.

The fire-fighting operations involved up to 250 servicemen, dozens of special vehicles and tractors, Gusak stressed.

He noted that in accordance with the Moscow military district commander's order an operational fire-fighting headquarters was established in the district. Major General Arkady Mkrtychev, chief of the district's logistics support department, is appointed chief of the headquarters.

"The fire situation in stationing areas of the district's units does not pose a threat to storehouses of arms and ammo," Gusak mentioned.

He added that fire-fighting units had been reinforced throughout the district and that special ditches had been dug and the grass cut in most dangerous areas.
