Moscow military district council approves new nominee for commander of 20th army

MOSCOW. Aug 2 (Interfax-AVN) - The military council of the Moscow military district has approved nomination of Major General Alexander Postnikov-Streltsov for commander of the 20th joint- arms army headquartered in the city of Voronezh.

Postnikov-Strelstov, who is currently chief-of-staff and first deputy commander of the 22nd joint-arms army, will replace Lieutenant General Sergei Makarov, who has been appointed acting commander of the unified federal troops group in the North Caucasus and deputy commander of the North Caucasus military district by Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov.

A source in the Defense Ministry's HR bodies told Interfax- Military News Agency on Friday that Postnikov-Strelstov, 45, was among the most promising generals in the Russian army. He was born in the town of Labinsk in the Krasnodar territory. He graduated from the Kyiv higher joint-arms command college in 1978, Frunze Military Academy in 1988 and General Staff Academy in 2000.

Postnikov-Streltsov served in motorized rifle units of the Land Forces. He occupied various posts in the Soviet troops group in Germany, as well as in the Far Eastern, Odesa and Moscow military districts.

He was appointed chief-of-staff and first deputy commander of the 22nd joint-arms army in August 2000. The 22nd army is headquartered in Nizhny Novgorod.
