Rebels in Chechnya bombed vehicles 11 times last week

KHANKALA. Aug 5 (Interfax-AVN) - Rebels in Chechnya mined 11 automobiles and armored vehicles during the week ending on August 4.

"Extremists energetically continue the mine war. Last week, sappers neutralized some 170 explosive devices, including 23 powerful land mines," a source at the headquarters of the Combined Federal Forces told Interfax-Military News Agency on Monday.

The source said that during the same week, rebels opened fire at federal forces 51 times and made 19 attacks on roadblocks. "Eighty percent of the attacks were made at night," he said.

Federal units engaged in search operations found 10 hiding places and a cache with arms and ammo. They seized about 250 kilograms of explosives and eight various shoulder-held anti- aircraft missile systems.

More than 70 people were detained on suspicion of involvement in rebel gangs and for violation of passport rules.
