GROZNY. Aug 5 (Interfax-AVN) - A commander of a subversive group subordinate to warlord Shamil Basayev was destroyed in the Grozny rural district, a spokesman for the regional operational headquarters in charge of the Chechnya campaign told Interfax- Military News Agency on Monday.
The commander identified as Lechi Shaipov "offered armed resistance to servicemen engaged in the search and detention of guerrillas and was destroyed," the spokesman said.
Servicemen and special service agents suffered no casualties in the operation, he stressed.
"Three operations took place in the Nozhai-Yurt, Achkhoi- Martan and Vedeno districts on Sunday. As a result, three rebels were eliminated and the same number of suspected extremists were detained," the spokesman said.
Also that day, federals found nine guerilla bases and several caches with arms, ammo and explosives. One of the bases located in the Vedeno district was found with the help from local residents. The base located in a forest near the Shamilkhutor village was intended for giving shelter to about some 20 people.
According to the spokesman, federal units operating in Chechnya seized one piece of small-arms, 23 artillery and three mortar shells, four grenade launchers, 26 hand grenades, 3.85kg of explosives and nearly 36,000 small-arms cartridges on Sunday.
