Bombing of Iraq may be introduction to large-scale war - Russian military expert

MOSCOW. Aug. 6 (Interfax-AVN) - New bombardments of Iraq are most likely to have grave consequences, Valentin Rog military expert of the Federation Council upper house of parliament, told Interfax-Military News Agency on Tuesday.

"The bombardments of Iraq, statements of the United States and Great Britain of possible invasion of Iraq with a goal to topple Saddam Hussein's regime might be regarded as an introduction to a large-scale conventional war in the vast Middle East region encompassing Eastern European nations, CIS states and Russia though the eastern part of the Black Sea," Rog said.

"Military confrontation between Israel and Palestine has never ended in the Middle East. Once the armed forces of the United Nations and Great Britain invade Iraq, the flames of war will burn higher and can be caught by Syria, Jordan, Iran and other countries," he said.

Rog expressed his belief that that the U.S. and Great Britain's intentions to invade Iraq undermine principles of the 21st century world order that must be based on taking collective decisions on matters of peace and war.

The general said that neither the world community nor the UN Security Council should tolerate arbitrariness of the United States, and unauthorized use of military force, above all.

When many states on the globe possess nuclear munitions and a wide range of delivery means, no country can act with special heed. "The risk is too high for all nations of the earth, even for the world's most powerful country that the United States justifiably considers itself to be," the general added.

Rog recalled that "Russia favors the idea of a multi-polar system of international relations with due consideration for interests of every country, including the United States and Iraq."
