Federal forces control situation in Grozny, Chechnya - spokesman

KHANKALA. Aug 6 (Interfax-AVN) - The situation in Grozny and entire Chechnya is fully controlled by federal servicemen and law- enforcers, a spokesman for the unified federal command told Interfax-Military News Agency on Tuesday.

"At present the situation in Chechnya remains calm," the spokesman said.

He confirmed that all possible measures were taken to prevent the escalation of subversive and terrorist activities on Monday and Tuesday.

August 6, 2002 is the sixth anniversary of invasion of Grozny by separatists under command of warlord Aslan Maskhadov.

"That is why rebels' threats to escalate tensions in Grozny, Gudermes, the Shali district and other districts of the republic were taken into account. Military commandant's offices in cooperation with Chechen law-enforcement agencies took preventive measures, including the conduction of special operations that made it possible to rule out a dramatic escalation of guerrilla activities on the Chechen territory," the spokesman said.

The entire personnel of the Chechen Interior Department was alerted on Tuesday and all staff members were ordered to remain at their places of service, acting department chief Colonel Akhmed Dakayev earlier told Interfax.

Reinforcements have been sent to roadblocks. Vehicles and the documents of passengers are examined more closely. Traffic policemen appeared in the crossroads of Grozny in the early hours of the day.

"One cannot expect any serious rebel attacks, but the police must react to any operational reports," Dakayev said.
