Federal aircraft strike at rebel camp in Chechnya

GROZNY. Aug 9 (Interfax-AVN) - The Russian Air Force completely destroyed a rebel summer camp in a mountain forest near the village of Yalkhoi-Mokhk in Chechnya's Nozhai-Yurt district on Thursday, Colonel Ilya Shabalkin, a spokesman for the regional headquarters of the anti-guerrilla operation in the North Caucasus, told Interfax-Military News Agency.

Rebels are believed to have sustained significant losses. The number and identities of killed rebels are being verified.

A rebel gang was hammered by mortars and partially destroyed in the Vedeno district, Shabalkin went on. The gang was going down a mountain slope to the Dyshne-Vedeno village.

"A large number of assault rifles and munitions" was found in the area subjected to the mortar strike, the spokesman said.

According to him, a federal unit found and destroyed a permanent firing point near a mosque in the Tsentoroi village in the Nozhai-Yurt district on Thursday.
