MOSCOW/STAVROPOL. Aug 9 (Interfax-AVN) - Military sailors and border guards have been involved in eliminating consequences of the natural disaster in southern Russia for two days.
"Sailors of the Novorossiysk naval base are providing aid to the city in the elimination of the natural disaster's consequences. The work is supervised by the base's chief-of-staff Rear Admiral Alexander Bezmeltsev," aide to the Navy commander Igor Dygalo told Interfax-Military News Agency on Friday.
The disaster in the city did not affect combat readiness of the base's units. Its infrastructure operates in the regular mode, Dygalo said.
"The sailors were prepared for the disaster, which made it possible to reduce the flood's consequences to the minimum. Several storehouses were damaged," he noted.
The press service of the North Caucasus border guard department told Interfax-AVN that mudslides had interrupted telephone communication with several border pickets of the Novorossiysk detachment. A reserve comprising 50 people has been formed to cope with possible force majeure consequences.
The Novorossiysk mayor's office hosts the headquarters supervising elimination of the disaster's consequences. A group of 20 border guards is staying there. It is ready to leave for any place in the city immediately to provide aid to the city's residents. Two cross-country vehicles of the Novorossiysk detachment are clearing roadblocks in the city.
In spite of the disaster, border guards of the Novorossiysk and Sochi detachments are serving in the regular mode, the official said.
