Abkhazia tightens controls on border with Georgia

SUKHUMI. Aug 12 (Interfax-AVN) - Abkhaz law-enforcement bodies have tightened controls at the Inguri checkpoint on the border with Georgia.

"Starting from August 11, people going from Georgia to Abkhazia through the Inguri checkpoint are checked to see whether they are on lists of Abkhaz law-enforcement agencies. This is done in order to prevent the crossing of border by guerillas," a spokesman for the Abkhaz Interior Ministry said on Monday.

He told Interfax-Military News Agency that officials of his ministry taking part in the checks were assisted by security service agents.

A military unit of the Abkhaz Armed Forces has been stationed in the vicinity of the Adange pass in order to tap mountain paths from the Marukh pass to Abkhazia across the Svanetian district, the spokesman said.

"Servicemen of the national armed forces are on alert in the area. Their main mission is to prevent activation of Georgian law- enforcement bodies and guerrilla groups in the strategic area," a spokesman for the Abkhaz Armed Forces command told Interfax-AVN.
