Monument to Kursk sailors opens in Moscow

MOSCOW. Aug 12 (Interfax-AVN) - A monument to deceased sailors of the Kursk submarine opened in Moscow on Monday.

The Kursk submarine was destroyed by a torpedo blast two years ago, on August 12, 2000. It had 118 people aboard.

The monument is a sculpture of a sailor holding a cap in his hand. A sinking submarine is depicted beside him.

"One of the best submarine crews of the Northern Fleet perished," Navy Chief-of-Staff Admiral Viktor Kravchenko said at the opening ceremony. "This is a monument to courage, heroism and sorrow," he stressed.

The monument was created by sculptor Lev Kerbel and Moscow's chief architect Igor Voskresensky.

The memory of the servicemen was immortalized in compliance with President Vladimir Putin's decree.
