Abkhaz military unit comes under attack from Georgia

TBILISI. Aug 13 (Interfax-AVN) - An Abkhaz Armed Forces unit came under attack from Georgian mortars near the Marukha pass in the Kodori gorge at about noon Moscow time (0800 GMT) on Tuesday, Abkhaz Vice President Valery Arshba told Interfax-Military News Agency.

No casualties were registered among the servicemen, Arshba said. "The Abkhaz unit was located on the territory subordinate to Sukhumi," he stressed.

Participants in the negotiations that are underway in Abkhazia's Gali district, including Georgian State Minister Avtandil Dzhorbenadze and Abkhaz Prime Minister Anri Dzhergenia, have been informed on the incident.

"The Abkhaz unit at the Marukha pass only has small-arms. The Abkhaz authorities will consider response measures," Arshba stressed.

The negotiations were suspended due to the incident. Dzhorbenadze immediately left for the Kodori gorge to investigate the situation at the site, a participant in the talks told Interfax-AVN.
