Emir killed, three guerrillas detained in Chechnya

GROZNY. Aug 15 (Interfax-AVN) - Abubakar Musayev, emir of the so-called Kurchaloi jamaat (administration), has been killed in the Kurchaloi district of Chechnya, a spokesman for the regional operational headquarters in charge of the Chechnya campaign told Interfax-Military News Agency on Thursday.

"According to reconnaissance data, Musayev was a victim of a gang war for money handed over to guerrillas for staging subversive and terrorist acts," the spokesman said.

The headquarters has reliable information about the intention of field commander Labazanov to get even with Arab field commanders responsible for deaths of four Chechen rebels caught in booby traps that have been planted by Arab mercenaries in their stationing areas, the spokesman noted.

Agents of the Federal Security Service department for the Kurchaloi district together with officers of the local police department detained two extremists in the Novaya Zhizn village.

"An engagement occurred during the detention, and one of the rebels got a penetrating gunshot wound in the hip. No casualties were registered among the federals, the spokesman stressed.

Another extremist was arrested in the Verkhny Noibera village of the Gudermes district. The 50-year-old resident of the village turned out to be involved in a guerrilla group under command of Khunkarpasha Israpilov that was destroyed by federal troops in 2000. The detainee has handed over to federals his firearms. An investigation is underway.

A total of four special operations took place in Chechnya on Wednesday. Federal forces confiscated 12 pieces of small-arms, 33 artillery shells, four grenade launchers, 52 hand grenades, one mine, 2.2kg of explosives and some 9,000 cartridges.

The police checked 16,147 vehicles and 27,203 people, found and destroyed 39 illegal oil refineries, detained five petrol tankers and confiscated 49.7t of illegally produced fuel and lubricants.
