MOSCOW. Aug 16 (Interfax-AVN) - The CIS military cooperation coordination headquarters is drafting the concept of military cooperation within the CIS for up to 2010, reads a press release circulated on Friday.
"The main goal of military cooperation development for the near and distant future is maintenance of peace and stability, creation of favorable conditions for the CIS nations to take solid and authoritative positions in the global community, counteraction to new challenges and threats," the press release says.
In the near future, the main attention in the military cooperation sphere may be concentrated on maintaining security of the CIS nations and defending their interests in the military sphere, as well as coordinating common positions in the military policy.
Adjustment of interstate activity in the framework of coordinated military policy on the multilateral, regional and bilateral levels, pulling efforts to combat international terrorism and illegal arms trade is also an important sphere of activity, the press release reads. Attention will be paid to drafting long-term programs on the most urgent military-technical cooperation issues with a scientific backing.
"The Defense Ministries of the CIS member nations are working out their proposals to the draft document. In the future, they will be summed up and finalized by the CIS military cooperation coordination headquarters and submitted for consideration to the CIS Defense Ministers Council," the press release says.
