Defense Ministry commission arrives in Chechnya to investigate heli crash

KHANKALA. Aug 20 (Interfax-AVN) - A Defense Ministry commission led by deputy minister and Land Forces Commander Nikolai Kormiltsev arrived in Khankala on Tuesday morning to visit the scene of the MI-26 Halo helicopter crash that killed about 100 people on Monday.

The commission includes Colonel General Vitaly Pavlov, commander of the Land Forces aviation, and more than 10 generals and officers from main and central departments of the ministry and General Staff, a competent source in the unified federal headquarters in the North Caucasus told Interfax-Military News Agency.

The commission members will visit the crash scene within a few hours. Following that they will visit the Khankala hospital that treats the injured passengers and crew of the helicopter, including its commander, Major Oleg Batanov.

"Sappers are demining the area near Khankala where the MI-26 crashed and approaches to it, the source said.
