About 20 rebels killed on Chechnya-Ingushetia border

KHANKALA. Aug 23 (Interfax-AVN) - About 20 rebels have been killed near the village of Bamut on the Chechnya-Ingushetia border, an official from the headquarters of the Combined Federal Forces in the North Caucasus told Interfax-Military News Agency on Friday.

"Late on Thursday, a special-task unit spotted a group of 100 rebels. An artillery strike was launched on the rebels. A mop-up operation is currently underway in the area," the source said.

It has been established that the group comprised 90 to 100 men. According to early reports, about 20 rebels have been destroyed.

Search operations are underway in the area.
