Police destroy two rebels in Chechnya's Naurskaya district

GROZNY. Aug 23 (Interfax-AVN) - Federal policemen accomplishing a regular patrol mission have destroyed two rebels on the 61st kilometer of the Mozdok-Kizlyar highway in the Naurskaya district of Chechnya, a spokesman for the Federal Security Service department in the breakaway region said on Friday.

"Two unidentified men armed with Kalashnikov assault rifles were shot dead when they attempted to resist policemen," the spokesman told Interfax-Military News Agency.

The rebels, born in 1968 and 1972, were residents of the Kalinovskaya village in the Naurskaya district. Two assault rifles, a home-made pistol and a kitbag containing hand grenades, Wahhabi leaflets and mine planting instructions were found on the scene of the engagement.

Another rebel touched off a landmine while opening his own arms and ammo cache in the presence of policemen. The incident happened near the village of Beno-Yurt in the Nadterechny district, the spokesman said.

Nobody else was harmed by the blast.
