Putin visits Marshal Shaposhnikov large anti-submarine ship

MOSCOW. Aug. 26 (Interfax-AVN) - Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday visited the Marshal Shaposhnikov large anti- submarine.

He went to the helicopter deck where the crew greeted him. The Russian anthem was played.

Putin was demonstrated the ship's armaments comprising a helicopter, torpedo launchers and missiles and told about its capabilities.

Later he was taken to the bridge where he examined the combat compartment of the ship and made an entry in the book of guests of honor.

The Project 1155 (Udaloi class) ship was laid down on May 25, 1983 at Yantar shipyard in Kaliningrad. It was launched on December 27, 1984. After testing it was adopted for naval service in February 1986.

Twice the ship was sent on special mission in the Persian Gulf. In 1998-1989 in five months it escorted 41 Soviet ships during 19 missions.

It spent seven months in the Gulf in 1991 during Desert Storm operation protecting international seafaring routes. It also took part in the evacuation of Russian personnel during unrest in Ethiopia.
