US experts highly appreciate actions of Balibino nuclear power station

MOSCOW. Aug. 26 (Interfax-AVN) - Results of the staff exercises held at the Bilibino nuclear power station have been summed up on Monday, a representative of the Rosenergoatom consortium told Interfax-Military News Agency.

The representative said that the exercises have been staged to practice personnel's actions in case of emergency. Among the participants in the exercises were experts of the US Department of Energy who took part in training in accordance with specific provisions of the agreement between Russian and US governments on nuclear safety cooperation. American specialists including experts of the Alaska University, North Western Laboratory and US Department of Energy characterized level of preparedness of the Russian personnel as a good one. In addition to that, the foreign experts praised high quality of communications and public address equipment available at the station in required quantity as well as high level of expertise of specialists of the Rosenergoatom Emergency center and technical center of the Bilibino station.

An American expert participating in the exercises said that not every station boasted similar assets in industrialized countries.

The results of the exercises will be dispatched to other Russian nuclear power stations to improve safety standards.

The principal thrust of the exercises held at the Bilibino station was aimed at practicing procedures to be taken in case of emergency, namely informing concerned organs of the Russian Federation, MAGATE, neighboring countries, technical support centers of the Russian Atomic Ministry, Rosenergoatom Consortium, other departments and services.

The Bilibino nuclear district heating plant was built from 1974 to 1976 and is used as a combined heating and electric power source. The station is operated as part of the Chaun-Bilibino energy unit in the Polar region and is connected to the unit with a system of power lines, their total length mounting up to 1,000 km. The station is designed to provide energy to mining and gold- mining enterprises of Chukotka, as well as to the adjacent industrial and dwelling facilities. The largest share of energy is consumed by resident of the district emptied in the gold- mining industry.
