Special operation in Georgian Pankisi gorge to start soon - spokesman

TBILISI. Aug 27 (Interfax-AVN) - No one is detained so far in the course of the Interior Ministry troops special operation that started in the Georgian Pankisi gorge for its active stage did not start yet, Nika Laliashvili, spokesman for the Georgian State Security Ministry, told Interfax-Military News Agency in a phone conversation.

He stressed that everything is progressing in accordance with an earlier developed and coordinated plan; currently the Interior Ministry troops are establishing themselves at additional strongpoints in whole gorge. The active stage will start in the near future but the date will obviously remain undisclosed, Laliashvili said.

The Pankisi gorge hosts "several group including criminal ones that feature people involved in preparation and carrying out of terrorist acts." Relations of those people with the Al-Queda organization remain unconfirmed, Laliashvili stressed.

The general number of those groups is not more than several tens of people. Laliashvili added that "everyone, who is to put up armed resistance to the operation, will be destroyed."
