Russian sappers complete mine clearance of former Soviet embassy installations in Kabul

MOSCOW. Aug 27 (Interfax-AVN) - Sappers of the Russian Emergencies Ministry completed mine-clearance operations of main installations belonging to the former Soviet embassy in Kabul.

"Twenty six installations of the embassy located on the territory of some 22,000 square meters are checked on the presence of mines and other explosive devices," Colonel Alexander Lepin, chief of the Lider center on holding mostly dangerous rescue operations subordinate to the ministry, told Interfax- Military News Agency on Tuesday.

"Bombshelters, underground corridors and heat pipelines generally lengthening 3km are cleared from mines too," Lepin said.

According to him, "the mine-clearance operations involved the most professional sappers of the ministry, who earlier practiced in Bosnia, Croatia and Kosovo and also involved in mine clearance of the Salang pass."

The territory's clearance from explosive devices was held to provide security for builders who are to restore the installations," Lepin added.
