Terrorists may attack U.S., Russian, Israeli, Uzbek embassies in Kazakhstan

ASTANA. Sept 5 (Interfax-Kazakhstan) - Kazakh National Security Committee Deputy Chairman Baurzhan Yelubayev told the lower house of parliament's Security Committee on Thursday that U.S., Israeli, Russian and Uzbek embassies in the country may come under terrorist attacks.

The security agency has intelligence reports about this possibility, he said.

"Active work is underway with special services of these countries aimed at preventing terrorist attacks against citizens or offices of these countries," Yelubayev said.

The Kazakh security agencies have sufficient intelligence on the activities of Hizb-ut-Tahrir, a banned extremist organization, in the country, he said.

The organization's emissaries have been seen in South Kazakhstan, the Almaty and Dzhambul regions, Yelubayev said.

"We are in complete control of the situation," he said.

Yelubayev denied a report carried by a private Saudi Arabian TV channel that asked Kazakhstan not to close down oil refineries in response to a U.S. request alleging that the refineries finance the Al-Qaeda terrorist organization.

"Neither the United States nor Saudi Arabia have sent us such requests," he said.
