Russian border guards confiscate huge batch of heroin on Tajik- Afghan border

MOSCOW. Sept 10 (Interfax-AVN) - A huge batch of heroin was detained in the area of responsibility of the Moscow detachment subordinate to the Russian border guard group in Tajikistan overnight to Tuesday, the press service of the Federal Border Guard Service reported.

"Four smugglers attempted to relocate two sacks with some 40kg of heroin through the border. After warning shots the violators abandoned the cargo and disappeared in Afghanistan," a press service official told Interfax-Military News Agency.

According to the official, in past three days it is the second attempt to relocate huge batches of heroin from Afghanistan to Tajikistan prevented by Russian border guards. On Sunday border guards of the Pyandzh detachment confiscated some 17kg of heroin in their area of responsibility.

"In general, Russian border guards detained some 155kg of heroin on the Tajik-Afghan border in August 2002," the official added.
