Last victim of MI-26 helicopter crash in Chechnya identified

ROSTOV-ON-DON. Sept 13 (Interfax-AVN) - The identification of remains of Captain Anton Brusnitsyn, who is the last victim of a MI-26 Halo helicopter crash in Chechnya is completed in the 124th forensic medicine laboratory of the Defense Ministry, the laboratory's chief Colonel Vladimir Shcherbakov told Interfax- Military News Agency on Tuesday.

"On September 18 we will complete the identification of all remains located in the laboratory but it can already be said that remains of 121 victims are identified," Shcherbakov said.

The identification of Brusnitsyn started in the middle of the past week.

"All methods apart the only one were used. Brusnitsyn does not have parents, only brother and sister, that is why the sequence analysis was needed," the laboratory chief stressed. The sequence analysis was also used for the identification of victims of terrorist plane attacks in the United States on September 11 last year.

The MI-26 military helicopter crashed near the Khankala base in Chechnya on August 19, while carrying 147 passengers and crew. The crash killed 118, including 114 at the scene of the crash.

Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov said on Friday that Chechen rebels shot down the MI-26 with an Igla shoulder-fired anti- aircraft missile launcher.
