North Caucasus border guards hand over 30 suspected guerrillas to police this year

STAVROPOL. Sept 19 (Interfax-AVN) - Servicemen of the North Caucasus regional border guard department have handed over 30 suspected guerrillas to law-enforcement agencies this year, the department's press service reported on Thursday.

The latest detention of suspected rebels took place on Wednesday. Border guards of the Yarag-Kazmalyar checkpoint on the Russian-Azerbaijani border detained a Russian citizen living in the Achkhoi-Martan district of Chechnya when checking his documents. The man going abroad had numerous fragmentation wounds. He was handed over to law-enforcement agencies that will check whether he involved in illegal armed formations.

The situation in the North Caucasus department's area of responsibility remained stable but complicated in the past 24 hours. No attacks on checkpoints and posts were registered.

Border guards on the Chechen and other straps of the border scaled up reconnaissance and combat operations and organization of ambushes with a goal to destroy extremist bases and control possible guerrilla route.
