DUSHANBE. Sept 19 (Interfax-AVN) - About 1,000 police officers of the Gorno-Badakhshan autonomous region in eastern Tajikistan are taking part in the Antiterror-2002 exercises.
The exercises have been underway in all regions of Tajikistan since late summer, as planned, a spokesman for the Tajik Interior Ministry told Interfax-Military News Agency on Thursday.
"They are aimed at upgrading the ability of police officers and troops of the Tajik Interior Ministry in the fight against terrorism, religious extremism and organized crime," he said.
"Badakhshan borders Afghanistan and the conduction of the Antiterror exercises in the area comes in handy. Policemen will practice group actions to destroy bandit formations of terrorists and release hostages," the spokesman said.
The scenario of the exercises provides for using weapons in the inventory of the region's police.
