Georgian Interior Ministry troops chief calls for inviting foreign observers to Pankisi gorge

TBILISI. Sept 25 (Interfax-AVN) - The arrival of foreign military observers, including those from Russia, would help create a more comfortable background for the anti-criminal operation in the Pankisi gorge, Georgian Interior Ministry Troops Commander Georgy Shervashidze said on Wednesday.

"I even consider it obligatory to involve foreign observers, for the their analysis of the situation and actions of the Georgian troops in Pankisi will help avoid various fabrications and misinformation," Shervashidze told Interfax-Military News Agency.

According to him, "in spite of getting data on the exit of all guerrillas from the area, the Interior Ministry troops will continue planned operations until reaching the goals assigned by the country's president."

"Posts established in the Pankisi gorge have become the strongpoints of law and order and the main elements for control over the situation. Moreover, the gorge is controlled by mobile forces, and there is also a police reserve," the commander said.

"I consider the situation in the gorge to be fully controlled by the republic's authorities," Shervashidze added.
