Russian, Kuwaiti defense ministers discuss military-technical cooperation

MOSCOW. Oct 3 (Interfax-AVN) - Kuwait's Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Jabir Mubarah al-Hamad al-Sabah and Mikhail Dmitriyev, who chairs the Russian committee for international military and technical cooperation, met in Moscow on Thursday to discuss bilateral military-technical cooperation.

"There are no limitations on the development of military and military-technical cooperation between Russia and Kuwait," a Russian Defense Ministry source told Interfax-Military News Agency.

The Kuwaiti officials also discussed the state and prospects for bilateral cooperation in the military-technical sector with Russian Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov.

"During the talks, Ivanov assured Jabir Mubarah al-Hamad al- Sabah that Russia is ready to train Kuwaiti servicemen and provide an opportunity to study advanced defense industry enterprises," the source said.

Russia signed two contracts for shipping arms and military hardware to Kuwait in 1994. The total value of the contracts amounted to USD763m. Kuwait got infantry fighting vehicles, Smerch multiple launch rocket systems, and Fagot and Bastion anti-tank missiles.

According to the source, the Middle Eastern country is now interested in procuring air defense missile systems. Russia offers Kuwait Tor-M1 air surface-to-air missile systems and Pantsyr air defense gun/missile systems. "The Kuwaiti party shows interest in Russian T-80U tanks, multiple launch rocket systems, BMP-3 infantry fighting vehicles and artillery systems," the source noted.
