CHISINAU. Oct 7 (Interfax-AVN) - Russian President Vladimir Putin sees no reason for implementing his Sochi statement of September 11 if the Sunday agreement with Georgian President Eduard Shevardnadze is fulfilled.
"The September 11 statement will not be implemented if we meet the yesterday accords with Georgian President Eduard Shevardnadze," Putin has said at a press conference on the results of the CIS Chisinau summit.
There are no obstacles for the implementation of the agreement with Shevardnadze, Putin stressed.
Back on September 11 Putin said in Sochi that Moscow reserved the right to self-defense if Georgia failed to put an end to rebel attacks on the Russian border. He instructed the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces to draft proposals on possible strikes at terrorist bases if the attempts to break into Russia persisted.
Meanwhile, Putin said after the Sunday meeting with the Georgian president in Chisinau that, on a proposal of Eduard Shevardnadze, the two border services would be instructed to upgrade cooperation to joint patrolling of the border. Shevardnadze promised Putin that the Chechen guerrillas detained on the Georgian territory in August and held by Georgian law-enforcement departments under investigation would be extradited to Russia soon. Russia and Georgia agreed to intensify contacts between secret services and to appoint coordinators for the anti-terrorist fight.
