UN observers to control Georgian ammo pullout from Kodori gorge

SUKHUMI. Oct 7 (Interfax-AVN) - Georgia will pull out ammunition from a school in the Chkhalta village in the Kodori gorge on Tuesday, press secretary of the Abkhaz Defense Ministry Levon Galustov told Interfax-Military News Agency.

"In order to control the withdrawal of ammo, a decision was made to extend the term of a regular patrolling of the Kodori gorge that UN military observers and servicemen of the Collective Peacekeeping Forces in the Georgian-Abkhaz conflict zone started on October 3," Galustov said.

"The Abkhaz authorities cannot control Georgia's actions in the upper part of the Kodori Gorge for Georgia is ruling the territory," Galustov stressed.

The Abkhaz authorities say that the situation in the gorge remains complicated. They claim that Georgian troops are still stationed in the upper part of the gorge violating Moscow agreements on the conflict settlement.

At the same time, Georgian Minister without Portfolio Malkhaz Kakabadze said in Tbilisi that Georgia confirms the readiness to let the command of the Collective Peacekeeping Forces, Abkhaz officials, diplomats and reporters accredited in Tbilisi to study the situation in the upper part of the Kodori gorge in detail.

"The measure will help spike all rumors on the escalation of tensions in the area," Kakabadze added.
