About 1,600 Chechens reported missing during second Chechnya campaign

GROZNY. Oct 9 (Interfax-AVN) - About 1,600 local residents have gone missing since the start of the anti-guerilla operation (October 1999) in Chechnya, according to Rudnik Dudayev, Chechnya's Security Council secretary.

"We have accurate data on the number of missing people. Some 1,600 people were reported missing during the second campaign in Chechnya, and 1,537 went missing during the first," Dudayev told Interfax on Wednesday.

He said that there are still reports about some security agencies violating the law during special operations in Chechen villages.

"We have adopted a legal foundation to protect civilian rights. The prosecutor general and the commander of the Combined Federal Forces have given the corresponding orders. The problem is that these orders and instructions are not being fully implemented," Dudayev noted.
