Russian Air Force commander leaves for visit to Armenia

CHKALOVSKY, Moscow Region. Oct 14 (Interfax-AVN) - Colonel General Vladimir Mikhailov, Russia's Air Force commander, left on a working visit to Armenia on Monday afternoon.

"In Yerevan, Mikhailov is expected to discuss military and defense contacts within the CIS Unified Air Defense system, of which he is head," Colonel Alexander Drobyshevsky, Air Force press service chief, told Interfax-Military News Agency.

During the visit, Mikhailov will also familiarize himself with the conditions at Russia's 102nd Military Base, which is located in Armenia. An aircraft grouping organic of the base accomplishes combat duty missions in cooperation with the Armenian air force and air defense in the framework of the CIS Unified Air Defense System, Bondarev said.

The Air Force chief pilots the IL-18 Coot military transport plane himself. Also aboard are generals and officers of the Air Force Staff comprising a Russian military delegation sent to Armenia.

"Mikhailov has mastered control of over 20 types of planes and spent over 5,000 hours in the air during his service with the Air Force," Drobyshevsky said.
