Federal artillery destroys about 20 rebels in Chechnya

GROZNY. Oct 15 (Interfax-AVN) - Some 20 rebels have been destroyed by federal artillery in Chechnya's Urus-Martan district, a spokesman for the regional operational headquarters in charge of the Chechnya campaign told Interfax-Military News Agency on Tuesday.

"A military reconnaissance party performing search operations found a guerilla group in forest-covered mountains south of the Komsomolskoye village. The group had stopped to have a rest and fixed a temporary camp. The federal grouping inflicted a fire strike on the camp," the spokesman said.

He stressed that some time later a unit examined the area and found 20 corpses of armed rebels, a large number of arms and communication means.

"The killed bandits are being identified," the spokesman added.
