Three people killed by landmines blasts in Grozny - updated report

GROZNY. Oct 16 (Interfax-AVN) - Updated reports say that a serviceman of the district military commandant's office and two policemen died in the blasts of radio-controlled landmines in the Oktyabrsky district of Grozny on Wednesday.

"The landmine blast on Saikhanov Street killed the commander of a platoon of an engineering reconnaissance company from the Oktyabrsky district military commandant's office, as well as two policemen who were riding by in a car. They were an officer of the passport and visa service from the Chechen interior department and officer of the Oktyabrsky district police department," a source in the Chechen interior department told Interfax-Military News Agency.

According to him, "five sappers and three policemen got various injuries."

Two radio-controlled landmines blasted 20 meters from the 29th stationary checkpoint located on Saikhanov Street in Grozny. Rebels activated the landmines when the commander of the sapper platoon found the explosive devices and was getting ready to defuse them.

Saikhanov Street is among the busiest in Grozny, practically all vehicles coming to the city from western Chechnya and Ingushetia use it.
