Rebels leave Georgia thanks to Pankisi operation - Georgian president

TBILISI. Oct 21 (Interfax-AVN) - Illegal armed units have mostly left the territory of Georgia thanks to the anti-crime operation in the Pankisi Gorge Georgian law-enforcement departments launched on August 25, Georgian President Eduard Shevardnadze said on national radio on Monday.

"The anti-crime operation is almost over. The main task of today is to expose people guilty of grave crimes in Georgia, Russia and other countries," Shevardnadze said.

It will be very difficult to accomplish this task without cooperation among law-enforcement agencies and without well- organized interaction with Russian border guards, the president stressed.

"Georgia has suffered a lot from movement of uncontrolled groups on the border, that is why cooperation of Russian and Georgian border guards legally established by the heads of the two nations' border guard departments in Yerevan last week corresponds to interests of both parties, but primarily of Georgia," Shevardnadze said.

"The document signed in Yerevan is among the key components of realization of Russian-Georgian accords achieved in Chisinau on October 6," he noted.

"The document guarantees close cooperation for reliable border protection," Shevardnadze concluded.
