KYIV. Nov 6 (Interfax-AVN) - A territorial department of the military law and order service is being set up at the Chernihiv garrison in Ukraine, the press service of the Ukrainian Defense Ministry said on Wednesday.
Completion of the manning of the department's separate company is among the priority goals for the moment, a press service official told Interfax-Military News Agency. "Requirements to applicants are no less tough than to those applying for special-purpose teams: height over 175cm, good physical training and a high level of personal discipline," he said.
The department in Chernihiv is the first body of the military law and order service, a new component of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Four platoons of the department's separate company are to be quartered in Chernihiv, one in the Pryluky garrison and one more in the Desna garrison before November 25, 2002.
Over 100 servicemen of the company will protect military installations, control obedience to traffic rules among military drivers, patrol the streets of cities and military compounds, the press service said.
"In Chernihiv alone, five teams of the military law and order service will patrol the city streets round the clock to prevent violations of military discipline by servicemen," the official said.
Ukrainian military experts believe that the creation of a new structure of the Armed Forces will allow a large number of servicemen within regular units to abandon non-organic missions and concentrate on combat training.
