Ukraine wants Austria, Russia to join investigation into illegal arms sales

VIENNA. Nov 6 (Interfax-Ukraine) - Ukraine is prepared to invite experts from other countries, Austria and Russia for example, to carry out additional investigation into charges of the illegal sale of Kolchuga radar systems to Iraq, President Leonid Kuchma told a news conference on Wednesday in Vienna, where he is on an official visit.

"If more investigation work is needed, we invite experts from other countries such as Austria and Russia. But Ukraine wants this problem solved," he said.

Ukrainian experts are now studying the findings of a U.S.- British group that is looking into charges of illegal supplies to Iraq, Kuchma said.

U.S. experts have raised more questions for Ukraine to answer, he said.

Ukraine did not supply any arms to Iraq, Kuchma said. It enabled U.S. and British experts to see whatever they wanted to see, he said.

Ukraine has also called on the UN Security Council to look into the charges, Kuchma said. "This is likely the only case of a country inviting the UN Security Council to investigate and establish the truth," he said.
