Federation Council approves limits on media coverage of antiterrorist operations

MOSCOW. Nov 13 (Interfax-AVN) - Russia's Federation Council, or upper house of parliament, has approved amendments to the laws On Mass Media and On the Fight Against Terrorism, which regulate the news coverage of antiterrorist operations by media outlets.

The decision was passed in a 145-1 vote with two abstentions.

The amendments ban the circulation of information hampering an antiterrorist operation and which poses a threat to people's lives and health. The also bar the media from circulating statements aimed at obstructing an antiterrorist operation, propagating or justifying resistance to carrying it out, and disclosing personal information on members of special task forces or a crisis center, as well as people assisting them, without their consent.

The amendments also ban the media from circulating information on technology for manufacturing weapons, ammunition, and explosives.
