ROSTOV-ON-DON. Nov 20 (Interfax-AVN) - The local Rostvertol JSO in cooperation with the Moscow-based Mil helicopter plant has launched modernization of the MI-2 Hoplite light multipurpose helicopter, Rostvertol Director General Boris Slyusar said on Wednesday.
Installation of more powerful and economical AI-450 engines is the main modernization component, Slyusar told Interfax- Military News Agency.
"The new AI-45 compact turbo-shaft engine developing 450hp was created by the Progress machine-building design bureau in helicopter," Slyusar said.
The engine is taking certification tests, he said. Its mass production will be launched at the Motor Sich enterprise in Zaporizhzhia.
"Replacement of regular GTD-350 engines on board the MI-2A with more powerful and economic AI-450 will boost the helicopter's flight and technical specifications and make it possible to extend its service life and overhaul period," the director general said.
According to him, the MI-2A will also be fitted with new main and tail rotor blades made of composite materials, up-to- date avionics and other advanced equipment.
"We have a clear vision of the market for this helicopter," Slyusar said.
The modernized aircraft will cost much less than up-to-date light helicopters made in other countries.
Investors have already taken interest in the MI-2A and they would like to take part in the creation of the upgraded helicopter.
Experts say that the MI-2 modernization program will take two years.
The MI-2 light multipurpose helicopter was designed by the Mil plant. It has distinguished itself as one of the most popular and reliable aircraft in the world. The MI-2 is used in accomplishment of training, sports, transport-passenger, sanitary, rescue, agricultural and patrol missions. A total of about 5,500 MI-2s have been manufactured.
