MOSCOW. Nov 26 (Interfax-AVN) - The Russian Atomic Energy Ministry has approved the project of floating nuclear power plants operating two KLT-40S reactors each to be constructed using warship and submarine technology.
"After we receive a license from the Russian State Atomic Energy Inspection Directorate, we will begin the construction of a floating power plant at the Sevmashpredpriyatie shipyard in Severodvinsk", the directorate's press center told Interfax- Military News Agency Tuesday.
The press center also informs that there are several areas intended for floating nuclear power plants (the electric output power of an atomic unit like this is 77 mW, and the heat power is 84 Gcal per hour) in Severodvinsk (Arkhangelsk region), Dudinka (Dolgano-Nenetsky autonomous district, Krasnoyarsk territory), Vilyuchinck (Kamchatka region), and Pevek (Chukotka autonomous district).
The construction of floating nuclear power plants on the base of a floating power unit operating KLT-40S reactors in Severodvinsk is part of the Energy-Efficient Economy Federal Program, a press center official said.
New heat and power stations is a matter of life support for regions not included into the National Energy System, Deputy Atomic Energy Minister Andrey Malyshev told the Small Sized Power Plants-2002 international conference held in Moscow November 19 to 20, 2002.
According to Malyshev, floating nuclear power plants is the most suitable concept for remote regions with powerful household and industrial energy consumers.
A floating nuclear power plant offers safe, reliable, and environment-friendly technology, and one of their advantages in comparison with conventional energy sources is that they are a good substitute for too costly organic energy resources in the fuel supply balance of the region, he said.
