U.S. may turn over Russian nationals taken prisoner in Afghanistan to Moscow

MOSCOW. Nov 27 (Interfax-AVN) -- The U.S. may turn over to Moscow Russian nationals being kept at the Guantanamo base as prisoners captured in the anti-terrorist operation in Afghanistan, U.S. Ambassador to Russia Alexander Vershbow told the press in Moscow on Wednesday.

Several citizens of Russia detained in the course of the operation in Afghanistan are in fact being held at Guantanamo, a U.S. military base in Cuba, said the ambassador.

"We have allowed our Russian partners to question them and if they really turn out to be answerable by Russian laws, we will hand them over to Russia with pleasure," Vershbow said.
