Leningrad Military District prosecutors rehabilitate over 6,000 victims of repression

ST.PETERSBURG. Nov 28 (Interfax-AVN) - Since 1991he military prosecutor's office of the Leningrad Military District has rehabilitated more than 6,000 victims of political repression, Lieutenant Colonel Nikolai Ivanov, aide to the district's military prosecutor for public relations, said on Thursday.

"A total of 9,500 cases involving more than 10,500 people have been reviewed, and more than 6,000 of them rehabilitated," Ivanov told Interfax-Military News Agency.

This work is in progress in the framework of the Rehabilitation of Victims of Political Repression Law, he said.

"Archive cases are being checked in the Leningrad, Vologda, Pskov and Novgorod regions and Komi autonomous republic. This year, 1,658 cases involving 1,958 people have been reviewed and decisions have been taken to rehabilitate 288 repressed people; 1,795 citizens' complaints have been considered and 1,542 rehabilitation confirmations issued; 480 people have been received on rehabilitation issues," Ivanov said.

According to the military prosecutor's office, 909 cases involving 1,164 people were reviewed last year. Decisions were taken to rehabilitate 260 people involved in 173 cases.

"In 2001, we considered 481 citizens' complaints and issued rehabilitation confirmations on all of them," Ivanov added.
